Prior to construction Atlantic Station was the largest urban brownfield site in the United States. In preparation to convert the 138 acre,  former Atlantic Steel Site into a new mixed-use development, Winter Environmental was contracted to provide various environmental services as part of the site clean-up.  These services included:  asbestos abatement, lead-based paint abatement, contaminated soil remediation, the construction and installation of an engineered cap and cover in compliance with the Consent Order (CO) covenants.   In addition, Winter Environmental provided the design, construction and operational maintenance of a groundwater remediation system that will operate in perpetuity.

Winter Environmental was also contracted to prepare a portion of the site, which included soil remediation, cap placement and construction and surface paving, to accommodate entertainment events including a national tennis open, national volleyball competition and the Cirque Du Soleil.

The overall performance period was 2000 – 2009.  Atlantic Station received the Phoenix Award in 2004 in recognition of being the nation’s best Brownfield project.
