Winter Environmental completed a large scale asbestos abatement project for DAK Americas in Leland, North Carolina. The work required an accelerated one year schedule and involved extensive abatement activities across multiple process areas, production structures, and large vertical assets within the active facility.
The scope included removal of thermal system insulation, tank insulation, structural fireproofing, duct insulation, floor tile and mastic, Transite panels, Transite laboratory hoods, caulking, glazing, and sheetrock. More than sixty individual containment areas were established using shrink wrap structures, HEPA filtered air filtration devices, and personnel and load out decontamination units.
Significant challenges included scaffold erection and containment around two dehydration columns, each 185 feet tall. Winter Environmental successfully completed full containment and access systems for both structures. In total, scaffolding was erected across twenty-three containment areas. More than 30,000 linear feet of pipe insulation was abated using aerial lifts and glove bag methods.
Overall, the project included abating 19,700 linear feet of pipe insulation, 25,360 square feet of structural fireproofing, 424,700 square feet of tank insulation, 68,320 square feet of Transite, and 57,980 square feet of floor tile and mastic. Winter Environmental delivered the project safely and efficiently within the required schedule, supporting DAK Americas’ ongoing facility improvement and decommissioning efforts.
