Winter Environmental was contracted to manage contaminated soil excavation at the former OMNI entertainment center, the future site of the Philips Arena Sport and Entertainment Complex. Lead and benzene impacts were identified across the property, which sat on a former manufactured gas plant site. In total, the team excavated, transported, and disposed of 48,400 tons of hazardous and non-hazardous soil under a fast-paced and heavily coordinated schedule.

Early phases focused on removing and treating about 4,000 tons of contaminated soil and debris from the south end of the site. Winter Environmental stabilized the material on site using a proprietary treatment process before disposal at a Subtitle D landfill. Critical portions of the work took place at night to limit disruption to ongoing construction activities.

Later phases required rapid removal of large stockpiles blocking access to new work areas. Over a four-day holiday period, crews worked around the clock to remove 19,400 tons of soil to meet the client’s schedule. Winter Environmental returned twice more to excavate an additional 25,000 tons generated by continued construction. Work proceeded through night shifts, weekends, holidays, and adverse weather to keep the project moving.

The most recent phase supported the 2017–2018, $200 million renovation of the venue. Winter Environmental handled soils and groundwater generated during micro pile boring, managing both solid and liquid wastes outside the venue to keep renovation activities uninterrupted. The team also installed a 20,000 pound air scrubber equipped with vapor phase granulated carbon filters. The 20,000 SCFM induced draft fan was engineered to exchange and scrub the ambient workspace air every fifteen minutes, allowing all trade contractors to continue operations without triggering an OSHA-mandated respiratory protection program.
