Winter Environmental was contracted to perform lead paint abatement and the removal of PCB/Galbestos roofing and siding panels at a historic aircraft maintenance facility at Robins Air Force Base. The work, completed under the United States Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, supported major fire and life safety upgrades to one of the base’s largest aircraft hangars, a 1940s era structure used for C 5 cargo aircraft maintenance and overhaul.

The scope included abating lead based coatings from structural steel and removing corrugated barrel roof and sidewall panels containing PCB/Galbestos materials. The team also cleaned building surfaces to remove dust contaminated with cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and lead. Multi media blasting was used to strip steel to white metal, while large scale containment systems were built and maintained under continuous HEPA filtration. Individual work zones reached volumes of up to two million cubic feet, requiring constant monitoring and strict air control.

Each phase demanded detailed planning, precise sequencing, and full compliance with both USACE and Air Force safety and environmental standards. Winter Environmental completed more than 190,000 man-hours on the project with zero recordable incidents, demonstrating a strong commitment to safety and high quality performance. The multiphase effort preserved the historic structure while ensuring it remains fully capable of supporting the mission-critical operations of Robins Air Force Base.
